After so many days of early rising, outdoor action, and non-stop travel; we finally had the Zeal equivalent of a lazy Sunday. The 10am breakfast and laundry were the only things on the itinerary before noon.

The day really got started at 1pm when we arrived at Covenant House. Covenant House is a shelter for youth aged 13 – 21. The building has a health center, classrooms, music and art rooms, and dorm style accommodations for youth in need. It’s a one-stop shop that helps put young Alaskans back on their feet when they need it most. After a great tour by Jessica, participants had a bunch of questions for her: how many people can stay here at a time, how does someone end up needing this type of help, what happens when they don’t listen to the rules? Jessica answered like the pro she is. After the Q & A, we followed her downstairs to a classroom where participants put together hygiene kits for youth still living on the streets. Covenant House has teams of staff who drive out in the community to give out bags of toiletries. Those bags are the hygiene kits that we put together today. They’re simple yet integral to the basic wellbeing of so many youth. Once we made as many kits as there were “ingredients”, we moved on to the art room. Covenant House just received a massive donation of art supplies, so participants happily helped the art teacher organize the new materials.

After three hours at the house, we departed for downtown Anchorage to check out the mall before heading to a movie theater for some rest and relaxation. ‘Finding Dori’ was awesome!

Tomorrow, we head out to Denali National Park to see North America’s tallest peak!
