Spain Immersion Details

Like our 14-day trip to Spain, our 3-week program is packed to the brim with tours, world heritage sites, and adventures. With three weeks however, the Spain Immersion saturates you with Spanish culture, food, dance, language, and people. Learn Spanish in and out of the classroom, receive a language course certificate, and earn community service hours volunteering with greyhound dogs that have been abandoned after injury or old age.

Zeal far surpassed our expectations from start to finish. As a parent that had yet to send her teen on a trip of this sort, I was nervous but Zeal was so on top of everything and quick to respond to any of our questions or concerns that I felt comfortable my daughter was in good hands. In fact I felt as if I knew David, Zeal’s director, by the end of the trip. – Susan S.

Day 1: Travel to Spain

Today we depart from Newark airport on our group chaperoned flight for Barcelona. Upon our morning arrival, we’ll head to our accommodations to settle in. There, we take time to get to know each other with icebreakers, team challenges, and games. In the afternoon, we head out for a city tour.

Day 2: Día de Antoni Gaudí

Today we visit two of Antoni Gaudí’s famous works, Park Güell and Casa Batlló. Each facility is a testament to human creativity and innovation. Put simply, it’s like entering the world of Dr. Seuss with a Spanish twist.

Day 3: La Sagrada Familia and Museo Picasso

La Sagrada Familia is a church designed by Antoni Gaudí. It began construction in 1882 and is estimated to be complete by 2032. Clearly a complex design, work has been ongoing consistently for over 100 years. After visiting this world heritage site, we continue on to the Picasso Museum. Home to one of the most extensive Picasso collections, this is a day full of world-renowned artists and their works.

Day 4: Welcome to San Sebastián

On Spain’s northern coast sits the charming Basque town of San Sebastián. Known for incredible food and even better beaches, we spend two days indulging our need for white sand between our toes and summer vibes. When we tire of the beach, we’ll take part in the St. James walking tour that overlooks the breathtaking Basque coast.

Day 5: Surfing in Basque Country

Believe it or not, but world-class surfing exists in Spain! Our second day in San Sebastián includes surf lessons from the region’s best surf school. No experience necessary today! It’s all about learning the basics and getting comfortable in the water. For those seasoned surfers in the group, instructors are there to help you progress and have a great time!

Day 6: Travel to Madrid

After arriving in Madrid, we settle into our hotel. Spain is known for its tapas, which are small snacks, often served together to create a complete meal. Our first dinner in this culinary powerhouse is tapas, and they are sure to delight.

Day 7: Explore Madrid

Like Barcelona, Madrid is filled with art, culture, history, and food. Today we visit the Plaza Mayor, Museo de Prado, and Centro de Arte Reina Sofía. In the evening we learn to make authentic Spanish cuisine and test our newfound skills in our very own Iron Chef competition!

Day 8: Granada

Departing in the morning, we make our way south to Granada, home of the Alhambra. This ancient palace is enchanting, and an absolute must-see for any traveler in Spain. We spend our time walking through delicate architecture, serene gardens and pools, and marveling at the intricate designs all completed by hand.

Day 9: Spa Day!

In the morning we travel to Malaga, on the southern coast. After a guided city tour to learn about this town’s history, we visit an Arab bath called Hammam al Andalus. The building has been there since the 13th century, and was renovated in 1998 to its present state. Words do no justice to the serenity felt here. With cold and hot baths, this is a wonderful way to spend an afternoon in Spain.

Day 10 and 11: Spanish Greyhounds

In Spain’s countryside, greyhounds are used as hunting dogs and often mistreated and abandoned once their utility as a hunting dog is gone, due to old age or injury. We assist a local organization in providing medical care, physiotherapy, aqua-therapy, socialization, and love until they can be adopted.

Day 12: Adventure in Morocco

Just across the straight of Gibraltar is Tangier, Morocco. It’s only a short ferry ride away from the southern coast of Spain, but upon arrival you immediately feel a world away. During your day in Tangier experience Berber dancing, shopping in a bazaar (meaning market), amazing food, and much more.

Day 13-19: Spanish Course in Malaga

We partner with Cervantes Escuela Internacional, a local Spanish language school that has been teaching for 30 years in Malaga. You will receive expert and native classroom instruction each morning, and in the afternoon we’ll head into the city to solidify your newly acquired language skills. At the end of the week you receive a certificate that can be used to receive school credit!

Day 20: Prepare for Launch

You’ve seen the sights, learned the language and cuisine, and made unbreakable friendships along the way. Today we celebrate this incredible journey with a final dinner and party. There’s also time today to pick up any last souvenirs and gifts.

Day 21: Travel Home

Adios España! Today we depart with our trip leaders and friends back to the U.S.
