The Stamps Foundation
The STAMPS foundation is an opportunity for children in my neighborhood of Bedford Stuyvesant Brooklyn to learn about various cultures from countries around the world. Students in the STAMPS foundation will also have the first hand break to see and encounter the world while also having the chance to help others. I believe that learning about what the world has to offer we will broaden their personal growth potential, which will help them soar in all areas of their lives.
In a once a week culture passport experience children ages 12-15 will learn about a variety of ethnicities from countries around the world in an after-school program. We will have experts and/or guest speakers demonstrating a piece of their culture through dance, food, art, music, and language. Being in New York City we have the opportunity to take a “field trip” each month around the city to preview the culture we are currently learning about.
I too grew up in a neighborhood similar to Bed-Stuy Brooklyn in Washington DC. Growing up there were not many opportunities to see the diversity that Africa has to offer, backpack through Europe, see South America, or help a country in need. I am now a professional travel agent who has spent the last 4 years experiencing various societies throughout the world. During the time that I have traveled as an adult I have experienced personal growth that I believe can also be translated into a program to help children in urban areas grow as well. I would like to even the playing field for all children not just a select few who are financially able to see the world. The STAMPS Foundation is that gateway!
