Today Zeal had an awesome opportunity to ride in a helicopter! For most of us it was our first ever flight in a helicopter and what a place to do it! Not only was it over the beautiful island of Oahu, but we flew in a replica helicopter of Magnum PI! I was terrified but glad that I did it and faced my fears.
As only four people could fly at a time, the others toured Turtle Bay Resort. They went shopping, rented electric bikes, went to the beach, and played a bit of basketball. The girls and I got ready for the Luau dinner buffet and put on our best attire.
In the afternoon we went to the Polynesian Cultural Center. It’s a massive fully outdoors center that features the cultural differences and similarities of the pacific islands. We walked around to the different islands and countries; they were separated into areas you could walk to. We got icecream in Hawaii, temporary tattoos in Tahiti, coconuts in Samoa, and a few of us took a canoe ride down the river that connected all the islands together.
The Luau buffet followed our time at the cultural center where our leaders put traditional lai’s on us before we sat down to eat. Shrimp scampi, king crab, and prime rib were some of the dishes on the menu and of course we finished with banana and macadamia icecream for dessert.
We went to a performance afterwards that showcased the different islands, tying them all together with the life story of ‘Ha.’ Parts of the show reminded me of the Lion King, while other parts reminded me of Lilo and Stitch. I may or may not have shed a tear or two. The show ended with a fire dance; they were twirling fire in the air and throwing the fire to each other.
All in all I had a blast today but can’t wait for tomorrow’s surfing!
